distinctly left-leaning slant and proud of you. we'll take your calls at 866-55-press. and here are what a lot of people are talking about today. mitt romney with a four-point lead over president obama. now it is just one poll out of many, but it does prove this election is not in the bag yet. it is going to be a close one and democrats have to continue to work their tails off between now and november 6th. 28 days left. but first here we go with today's current news. hi, lisa, good morning. >> hey, bill good morning, everyone. president obama leaves san francisco this morning, and then he heads to columbus, ohio where he is speaking at ohio state university. mitt romney is hosting an event at the koch family farm and

then heads to a rally. several news outlets are pointing out how similar mitt romney's plan is to president obama's. his goal yesterday was to outline a stark contrast to president obama. as think progress notes there are at least four major areas where romney and the president's plan are nearly identical. one is afghanistan. both plan to transfer power to local security forces by the end of 2014. syria, romney wants to give aid to neighboring states. number 3 is iran where both romney and the president say the country should not have access to nuclear weapons. plus yesterday romney promised to restore aircraft carrier

groups to the region but we already have one in the gulf. and romney attacked the president for not signing a single agreement in the last four years, but he is wrong. mr. obama has signed agreements with south korea, and panama. we'll be right back. growing up i had a single mother of four and people in the community were so helpful when they didn't even have much themselves. seeing people and their hardships made me want to make a difference in people's lives to give them hope. receiving a masters degree would open the doors for me to get into a management position where i would be able to do more for people.

washington and baltimore. the orioles tied it up last night. >> into his motion and delivers. sinker, swing and miss, struck him out, ball game over. tim johnson, redemption. he gets them one, two three and ends it with a strikeout of alex rodriguez. >> bill: i turned it off when they projected that the first pitch would be at 8:45. i figured they would delay it again. >> yeah, they got it in. >> bill: i'm going to the national's name tomorrow. >> bill: how did you get a ticket, hombre? >> i have connections. >> bill: i tried to get a ticket yesterday. i wanted two tickets.

and it came back and said we can't sell you that many tickets. try again. >> yeah you can buy them online through certain ticket sellers -- >> bill: yeah, do theying want my right leg or my left leg -- >> they have standing-room only tickets that you can buy for the low, low price of $120. >> and that basically lets you in the stadium to walk around the concourse. >> yeah. >> bill: you just walk around. well the concourse is pretty good. >> so go in and have a $9 hot dog, and an $8 beer -- >> yeah, or you can get seats on top of the scoreboard for like

>> sally field was awarded a presentation last night here in washington, d.c. and in that speech she came out that her son was game. and he presented her with the award. >> bill: dan, thank you. foreign policy and national security is center stage this morning. this is where i thought we would start our discussion this morning. it is not the centralish glue this presidential election. we know that. jobs and the economy is still going to be the deciding issue. it is what impacts most people in this country. it's what most people are concerned about. holding on to their job and house, making it through this sluggish economy as the economy does of course continue to improve under president obama's

economic plan but yesterday mitt romney gave a foreign policy speech. that's what most of the news is about this morning. he gave the speech at the virginia military institute. i always get a chuckle over the fact whenever republicans want to appear tough and give a foreign policy speech, where they say we're going to run over anybody who looks -- that we don't like basically, anywhere on the planet they always go to some military school usually peter down in south carolina this happened to be in virginia because they know they are going to get a willing audience of little cadets in their uniforms who say we're going to bomb cape town. yay! [ laughter ] >> bill: then we're going to bomb paris. yay! so any way he got that crowd and got the reception he wanted and

he put out a lot of stuff that just is not true. he said for example, this country is in greater danger than we have ever been before; that we have gone downhill in the eyes of the world in the last four years; that there's no direction to obama's foreign policy; that we have had no successes oversees. it has just been gloom. just like he says about the economy, we haven't created any jobs, the economy has just gotten worse under obama. he painted the same equally untrue picture of our foreign policy. here he is for example taking a pot shot at the word hope. >> romney: i know the president hoped for a safer freer and more prosperous middle east. i share this hope.

but hope is not a strategy. we can't support our friends and defeat our enemies in the middle east when our words are not backed up by deeds. >> bill: our words are not backed up by deeds. hum. maybe he should ask osama bin laden about that one. what do you think mitt? >> or maybe ask gadhafi. >> bill: yes. and then here is a typical totally empty-headed hollow republican mark. >> romney: i believe that if america doesn't lead others will. others who don't share our interests and our values, and the world would grow darker for our friends, and fours. >> bill: profound. profound mitt. jesus christ could never had said it any better. and america, he says, we need a totally different course in our

foreign policy. >> romney: it's time to change course in the middle east. that coarse should be organized around these bedroom principles, america must have confidence in our cause, clarity in our purpose, and resolve in our might. >> bill: what pradel. he doesn't say anything. you read the stories this morning. and basically when he spelled out what we should do it is basically nothing different than what president obama has done. he said we should support those who want to bring democracy to the middle east. and he said we should be joining other countries, helping them arm the rebels in syria.

that's worth a debate whether or not the united states should be supplying tomorrows the rebels. we are supplying other forms of aid, but only on that point did % mitt romney say anything differently. i want to know what you think about this. what do you think about foreign policy that president -- president obama has brought about a different approach to foreign policy. i don't think there is any doubt. let's look at the war in iraq. it's over. there are just some peace-keeping troops there, and troops training the iraqi police. the war in afghanistan is wining down. that ten-year -- is it -- or maybe 12 years now we have been in afghanistan. we have a new democratic regime in egypt, we have a new democratic regime, working on it, in libya.

we have called for the removal from power of president assad of syria, and again, without supplying them arms or helping the rebels and have clearly put ourselves on the cause of the rebels there. not to mention almost the entire leadership of al-qaeda is gone. they have been targeted and killed by the obama administration. osama bin laden no longer is a threat to the united states and neither is moammar gadhafi. and iran is nowhere closer to getting a nuclear weapon than they were before president obama took office. and america's prestige is up all over the world. the most popular person in europe today is barack obama. so people look differently and more kindly and more as a friend and partner to the

united states than they ever did under george bush and dick cheney. i think this president has made a huge contribution in lifting the united states in the eyes of the world, and we are safer today than we ever were under george bush and dick cheney. 866-55-press, what do you say. >> announcer: radio meets telejigs. the "bill press show" now on current tv. of this democracy and see your tweets up on our screen. >>now that's politically direct.

expertise with the nation magazine, our own dave zirin. what do you say? >> hey, bill. >> bill: what do you say about the nationals? >> i don't even know what to say. experience might be a tremendously overrated commodity when it comes to playoff baseball. that's what i used to think, and i think a lot of us used to think was the one truism in baseball. but we're seeing it now the value of being young, dumb and ready to get out on that field and swing the bat. so it's an amazing thing to see the nationals and to contemplate that we could be looking at our beltway version of the series.

if that happened i would feel like the mayans were right, the world is about to implode. >> bill: let's not get ahead of ourselves -- >> oh i'm sorry. >> bill: but still it certainly felt good to win that first game. >> absolutely. look at who they are playing. the nationals are playing the depending world series champions in the st. louis cardinals. and i think the nationals my goodness top to bottom the lineup is without flaws. the washington nationals have the best record in majority leader baseball. they are managed by the great davey johnson who managed the 1986 new york mets and then when you flip over to the orioles, they are 29-9?

one-run games this year. and 74-0 when leading after seven innings. this is a team that has ice water running through its veins. and to see andy pettitte being taken down in a post season game -- it's like ivan drago in rocky iv where they say he's cut! he's cut. to see the cardinal and the yankees go down on a knee it does make you think, holy crap we could have a beltway series. >> bill: yes and at the same time there is the rest of the country -- >> oh screw them.

let him have his moment bill. [ laughter ] >> bill: but not too bad for the san francisco bay area. >> not at all. but i tell you something this oakland as team that is the one thing right now. i was making a joke that mitt romney said i picked the oakland as to go all the way and it would have been just another lie, because nobody picked the as, so just the mere fact that they won that season and outlasted the rangers and angels of anaheim just west of orange county, whatever they are calling themselves right now, it was an amazing feet on to themselves, but the district tigers i picked them to get out of the american league in april.

i thought that looked so stacked to me, but the tigers i think are totally going to lay waste to them. >> bill: yeah. >> and the poor san francisco giants. every time i see joan walsh send a tweet i die a little inside. [ laughter ] >> that's right. i call it the original title before it got edited was the smartest or the dumbest, or maybe the dumbest an athlete ever sent. because it's one thing saying we ain't coming to play school is hardly something that is going to ring through the ages -- >> bill: oh, i don't know. >> yeah, you are right. it will ring through the ages. because it touches on the incredible hypocrisy that money plays. because you are an unpaid campus employee. you are in a position of indentured servitude, and the

coach of ohio state makes a base salary of $4 million a year. he is the highest paid public employee in the state of ohio. he has use of a private yet. he has a membership to a golf club. he has a fellowship in his name on campus, and the whole precipus, the whole foundation is the stance that we are asking 18 year olds to actually participate in this hypocrisy. >> bill: you are on a role but we have to go. dave you are on it as always. thanks, my man. >> my privilege guys. >> announcer: this the "bill press show." ♪

economist was shocked. because the real number is anywhere from 16 to 21%. >> bill: and if you don't believe it, ask donald trump. >> there was a time -- and i will admit to falling into some of this that donald trump was entertaining. he has always been a little nutty and kooky and entertaining, but now he is just obnoxious. >> i watched the first couple of seasons of "the apprentice." it was fun. now he has just gone crazy. >> yeah. >> bill: i thought he was a fraud from the beginning. i never liked him. i'm going years back, and maybe it is because i met him. >> that might be it. >> bill: yeah, i actually filled

in for donald trump. it's a long story. but i filled in for donald trump once at a big fund raiser in philadelphia where people paid thousands of dollars to have their picture taken with donald trump, and he didn't show up until two hours late -- >> so they took pictures with you? >> exactly. >> well, you do have better hair. >> and his helicopter swoops in to this dinner. he is a putz. total jerk. [ laughter ] >> bill: speaking of "the view," i have to say my favorite member of "the view" team of course is joy behar, and it was so much fun last night to be in new york in studio with joy behar debating the issues with armstrong williams but joy is a real kick. i love the title of her show

"say anything," because she will. she is a great talent great fun, and good to see her on "the view" and on current tv. judd will be here as he is every tuesday to take a look at the big mitt romney speech and chris geidner, and everybody is all upset about the latest pew poll. don't panic. i'll tell you all about it. >> on this tuesday other stuff to talk about, another day another split in hollywood. this marriage lasted a while, though. danny devito and wife rita perlman are calling it quits. they have been together 42 years. they have got three adult children together. no word yet what is causing the

split. >> bill: they have been together 42 years married for 30 years -- marriage can only last so long. can you believe it? >> we all know what they look like, right. when you look at the two of them next to each other, all i can think is there is somebody for everybody. >> bill: they made the perfect couple. >> absolutely. >> bill: they are both stand up comics, four feet tall and ugly as sin. >> yeah they are not attractive people. >> the opposite of ugly as sin, esquire magazine has named mila kunis has this year's sexsiest woman alive. she doesn't shy away from talk about politics telling the magazine, quote, the way that republicans attack women is so offensive to me and the way they

talk about religion is offensive as well. some people don't like to hear celebrities talk about politics. i don't think i'm a celebrity, i'm a working actress. >> oh god. spare me that line. >> and it's looking more and more likely that the smaller cheaper ipad is coming this fall. apple has placed an initial order of 10 million tablets being dubbed as the ipad mini. the current ipad has a 9 inch screen, while the competing kindle and nook have 7-inch screens. >> the phones are getting bigger, and the ipads are getting bigger. >> i wouldn't want a smaller screen. >> the only benefit would be cost. because presumably you could buy

one for cheaper. >> bill: no. >> i'm with you. >> bill: steve jobs would not like it either. >> i think you might be right. >> bill: all right. yes, indeed look the news of the day we have already had calls and emails about it. obama supporters are panic over the latest pew poll. the poll this morning shows that among likely voters since last week's debate mitt romney has soared -- well, he has bounced at least and he is up four points now. 49-45 over president obama, again, according to the pew research center among registered voters it's 46-46. here is my take on this. don't panic. okay? ing don't panic. it is not all over. some people think it is and not

the case. let us remind ourselves, and just step back here for a second, what this really does mean. first of all i have to -- i -- i have to laugh remembering that just a week or so ago, before the debate when every one of the national polls showed president obama up by three, four, five, six, seven points. republicans were running around saying polls don't matter. these polls don't mean anything right. now there's one poll that goes the other way, and the top headline is it's all over for obama. suddenly polls matter now, right? so don't fall into this trap. if anything this proves as president obama has said from the beginning, this is going to be a close election friends.

i don't think it should be. i think obama has done a great job, and he ought to be reelected unanimously, but not going to be that way. times are tough. too many people are still out of work. the economy has just not recovered as quickly as it should be. and there are so many gazillions of dollars in super pac money on the other side all of this point to a close election. you also have to remember that this is only one poll out of many, and this is a national poll, and we do not vote -- we have made this point before -- we do not vote as a nation for president. we vote state by state by state by state and it's electoral votes that decide. all of that having been said

what i do with these polls, and i tell everywhere i go and people ask me which polls to trust and which polls not to trust, i always tell people go to real clear politics. i'm not saying it is not in the bag for obama. it's not in the bag for romney either. if you look at real clear politics, and compare, national polls, a lot of numbers here and i think it'sing important to keep this in context. pew has romney up by four points. "politico," obama up by one point. gallop, obama up by five points. cnn, obama up by three points.

nbc, obama up by three points and real clear politics averaging out has obama up by a half of point when you take every single national poll out there. so, yeah romney does well on the pugh poll, obama is leading in all of the rest of them. the in-trade -- peter can help me out with that. the in-trade average, i think is sort of like the las vegas betting average. >> yeah. yeah. yeah. >> bill: right. what the brokers are saying if you are placing bets or buying stock, the in-trade average by the way is obama 64 romney 35.7. so the prognosticators are not giving romney a great chance here. now what is more important is to go to the battleground states.

pardon me. again, the battleground states, and there are about ten of them they are the ones that are really at play. it's going to be the electoral vote college. let's look at some of the battleground states. in pennsylvania president obama up by seven. florida tie. republican-leading state obama is still tied there. iowa, obama up by 3.2. colorado close. obama up by .2%. >> michigan obama up by 6. nevada obama up by 4.6. ohio, no republican has won the presidency without winning ohio obama is up by three. mitt romney and president obama are in ohio today.

ohio is a key, key, key battleground state. when you add them up here is where the electoral college stands today. you need 270 to win. president obama has locked in, according to real clear politics, 251. mitt romney 181. so this thing -- my point is, far -- this thing is far, far, far from over. this thing is going to be close, and the pew poll is no reason to panic. 866-55-press. that's the lay of the land. that's the real lay of the land today, so you know what it really means? 28 days left no letting up. just work our butts off in every way that people. tell your friends, tell your

going to vote this year. >> bill: well i hope so. >> caller: we got an allred state house here in ohio. >> bill: exactly. and you also had a secretary of state who tried to suppress the vote in ohio. people can already vote in ohio. good to hear from you. mike in sheperdstown west virginia. >> caller: good morning, bill you are doing a good job. even the president said this i think we all knew that it would tighten. and i don't know that the debate performance was really that great. but i think that the polls are going to tighten. you have said this consistently. this is going to be a close race. >> bill: absolutely. every time i have heard the

president speak about this, he tells people that right? there are too many factors the way this country is split today that contribute to the fact that it is going to be close. it's not going to be a big difference, maybe three to five points either way. >> caller: yeah, don't get mad, vote. >> bill: exactly. all right. mike appreciate it. i think it's important that we keep our perspective about these polls. it's not the national polls that matter. we ought to be looking at the battleground states. and the president is in ohio. he knows what it is all about. the president has been in ohio virginia, nevada florida i think he has headed back to north carolina, he knows where the votes are. he knows what he has got to win,

>> we have been going through in real time, that's how we blog the debates. we have three more debates coming up and we'll be doing it. and i think like everyone as we watched the debate it was clear it was not obama's best night. he wasn't mentally there, wasn't fighting back as much as he usually would. but what kind of comes out, and it is not immediately apparent was just how much mitt romney had shifted, and shitted from a place of being honest about what his plans were really to the other side. so if you look at his -- you know, his tax plan medicare plan, foreign policy, straight down the line he wasn't being clear and open about what his policies were.

it's unclear what they are at this point, but that was something i think that emerged as you took a step back and looked at the debate. >> bill: yeah, as you point out, and we have got to admit it, it was not obama's best night, but mitt romney looked good right? but there has been very little focus other than you, think progress, on what he said and the stuff that mitt romney was saying. some of it was unbelievable. he says he is going cut taxes by $4.8 trillion, but no taxes that will contribute to the deficit? >> yeah. that one stuck out, especially since you can go right back to the primary campaign and when he was debating newt gingrich and rick santorum and the rest of the crew, he said hey wait a second, i'm going to reduce

taxes by 20% across the board including the top 1%. that was his line. and the other thing that really stuck out is this issue of preexisting conditions when he looks into the camera and says hey, my plan does cover preexisting conditions. well that is just not true. it doesn't cover preexisting conditions for people who haven't had insurance before, which is a big part of the problem, literally millions and millions of people who would not be covered under his plan. >> bill: the one that really disappointed me to say the least, three times he came back to president obama has cut medicare benefits by $716 billion. >> yeah well there's -- there are a number of problems with that, starting with that it's not true. it's -- what he has done is they found savings on the provider

side, so if you are a medicare beneficiary, you are not going to have your benefits reduced which is of course what people -- >> bill: it's insurance companies who participate in the medicare advantage -- >> yeah. >> bill: and are taking advantage of it. >> yeah, getting more reimbursement than really they should be, but though other part beyond that is that paul ryan included all of these cuts and really savings on the beneficiary side in his budget. mitt romney said he would of course support the ryan budget. now he is saying that is not my budget, that is his budget but he would sign it if it came to his desk. but the point is to criticize cuts that your running mate, the person you think is best qualified to step in for you, also endorsed along with the

bulk of the republican conference, you know is a little bit disenagainous. >> bill: on the issue of tax cuts it is $4.8 trillion but he said it is not going to add to the deficit, because he will offset that loss in revenue by closing tax loopholes. he hasn't identified which loopholes he would close or which programs he would cut other than pbs. >> right. >> bill: big bird. here we go right. substantial savings? >> well of course not. as we know it's actually less than .01 of 1%. and it's funny how these debates shake out. i think if you look at the polls, mitt romney at least in the immediate aftermath has gotten a bump. he has improved his standings

from where he was. but one of the things that -- that i have noticed as an observer of this is that a lot of times the debate will get distilled down to one or two or three moments, and one of the moments was this big bird moments. it was shocking to have somebody call out big bird. >> bill: yeah. >> and the obama campaign has a new ad out this morning that focuses on big bird. >> bill: we have got to get that, yeah. >> so i don't think it is going to be the last you hear of it. and i think it's part of the process of the obama campaign take what wasn't their greatest performance, and we'll have the vice president debate this week and then two presidential debates in the weeks following, but try to define the debate and make it about the points they

weren't to talk about. and i think they have succeeded in this one. in that if you ask somebody to tell you what happened in the debate, this is probably one of the parts that would bring up. >> this is the one that still has legs. president obama does make fun of his own performance, but he is having a lot of fun at every stop talking about big bird. >> obama: elmo -- has been seen in [ inaudible ] suburban. he is running for the border. oscar is hiding out in his trash can. >> bill: like oj in the white suburban. and the audience is picking up. they know what he is talking about. >> and i think one of the problems for romney is it is

hard for him to pivot off of this because he doesn't have a lot of other specifics. >> bill: right. if you are asked to name specifics and you only have one, and you turn into it a punch line, and you can say i'm not just talk about pbs, i want to cut this program and this program, he doesn't want to get into all of that. >> bill: yeah. mitt romney yesterday giving a big speech on foreign policy where we has president obama has a feckless foreign policy that has left this country less secure and we have lost our leadership in the world. but what did he propose? >> it was a fascinating speech in this respect, that it was

reter toicly about president obama. but then if you peel back that layer, and look at the policies they really don't differ at all on a lot of the major issues from what obama is currently pursuing. if you look at his policy on iran, basically he is saying that we should have very tough sanctions, which we would enforce, and i think president obama has implemented the toughest sanctions that we have ever had. >> bill: absolutely. >> no one has made them as tough has president obama has when he has been in office and mitt romney really hasn't gone and delineated as netenyahu would -- would presumably like folks to do some clear red line that -- that differs from obama's red line. obama has said they didn't get nuclear weapons. that seems to be where mitt

stick. >> yeah, and i think obama is pretty good at taking these kinds of moments and not letting them go. i think you will probably hear this in every stump speech -- >> bill: and he may raise it again at the next debate. >> yes. and they are pretty good at finding an advantage like this and trying to run it with. >> bill: on iraq mitt romney said yesterday -- criticized the president for pulling all of our troops out of iraq. the war in iraq is over. is mitt romney really saying we ought to go back in or stayed there? what is his point? >> i think that's the issue. he is not saying that. he doesn't have a plan that we're going to take 10,000 or 5,000 troops and go back in that we know about -- >> there are still some troops there. >> yeah, for the embassy in particular and things like that. so he's not saying that he is

going pursue a different policy but he just wants to be critical of what the obama policy is. and i think that's what we saw through the issues, if you listen it to it sounds like he is ready to take the nation on a very different course, but hasn't articulated a substantial difference. there is an interesting piece in the "new york times" that described how he is being pulled in a lot of different directions. the neo-cons on one side and the more moderates on the other side, was described as disengaged by on the issue by his own campaign aids who were interviewed. so clearly not a place where he has really carved out a crisp platform or message. >> bill: or a place where he is comfortable. let's hear a quick hello from joey from chicago. >> caller: good morning, guys.

today he spent the night in san francisco after a couple of campaign events in san francisco yesterday afternoon and evening. this morning he leaves san francisco at 9:25 and heads off to ohio. of course ohio. ohio, wow, he's -- i think he could register to vote in ohio he has been there so often. a big campaign event at ohio state university in columbus ohio where i was with president obama when he kicked off his 2012 campaign. he'll be back on that campus today, and that's a key state. the latest real clear politics poll shows president obama up by three points in ohio. he wants to increase that lead and we'll be going back to ohio i'm sure probably ten more times between now and november 6th. we'll come back, did mitt romney really say anything substantial

points. those numbers were going into last night's big debate. kaine called himself a huge public broadcasting fan and promised not to fire big bird if he takes the senate. george allen, though distances himself from women voters when he refused to answer questions on abortion. the general assembly has proposed forcing women to have an ul twra sound before they get an apportion. last night allen refused to stake a stance on that. and when asked whether life starts at conception allen said a personhood bill could help punish an attacker if they hurt her unborn child. and 22-year-old abigail fisher who is white says her race is the reason she was not accepted to the university of texas. she is hoping to get race completely out of the admissions

fleckless foreign policy that got us nowhere. >> romney: i believe if america doesn't lead others will. others who don't share our interests and our values and the world would grow darker for our friends and for us. >> bill: what does that mean? >> yeah. >> bill: that implies that america hasn't been a leader for the last four years? >> yeah. was a speech that was very much like his debate performance. it was well delivered, booming rhetoric, filled with values and compassion and all wrapped in flags, but when you examined it there was very very little substance there. very few instances where you could see he would do something different from what president obama was doing, and sprinkled in there were a lot of falsehoods and distortions. >> bill: yeah. like we weren't as safe as we

were. >> four years ago we were in iraq. people were dying every day in iraq. we're out of that now. osama bin laden has been killed. al-qaeda has been decimated. we are moving out of the war in afghanistan. we have isolated iran more than it has ever been isolate before. it is hard to find that you can claim where something is worse than it was four years ago. >> bill: there is a new government in egypt, in tanishia, the arab spring has happened. >> yes, and he presents it as a threat and then he pivots to praise it. it is much more nuance many

people who are islamist also want peace. this is actually the kind of thing we want to see, the arab people taking their faith in their own hands. >> bill: let's talk about iraq romney is critical of the president >> romney: america's ability to influence represents for the better of iraq has been undermined by the abrupt withdrawal of our entire troop presence. >> bill: first of all it was hardly abrupt and secondly what is he suggesting? that we should not have ends the war in iraq. >> more than that it was president bush who signed the

withdrawal agreement. these are sins of omission. so it was president bush who agreed to withdrawal all u.s. combat forces. >> bill: does he really think the american people want to continue this war in iraq? >> of course not. the american people wanted us out then, and want us out of afghanistan faster. he just raises these vague images of danger and fecklessness, and weakness without saying he would do anything different, same in afghanistan. it's a remarkable segment on afghanistan where he says that he also would withdrawal all u.s. combat troops but then criticizes the president for doing that. you say you can't hold two contradictory thoughts in your mind at the same time well mitt romney does. >> bill: okay. what about iran? >> this is where he really wants

to sound tough that he would do something different than the participate. so he then gets into specifics. i got to read this. i will put the leaders of iran on notice the united states will prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons capability. obama has done that. i will tathen the sanctions we currently have. check, obama has done that. i will increase the presence of aircraft presence. check, obama has done that. will work with israel to increase our military assistance. check, obama has done that. and finally their nuclear pursuit will not be tolerated. check. done. so where does he differ. >> bill: he is certainly not saying what netenyahu seemed to want him to say which is we're

going to bomb iran day one of my presidency. >> if he has a policy that is different in substance than what he president has he should say so, and he doesn't. >> bill: the one area i have read about, he did say that we should indirectly help other nations arm the rebels in syria. >> yeah. >> bill: not that we should give them arms directly. but indirectly. so that is a difference right? president obama we are sending aid to the rebels but not military aid. isn't that a difference? >> this is a slight difference but the u.s. -- you know is coordinating with our allies to get supplies to the rebels. >> bill: right. >> it complicated because our allies have different views.

there's also some evidence that we're actually covertly supplying arms to the rebels. we have a $25 million program for non-lethal aid. but most of this is being done through the arab countries, not through the united states directly. so there is a difference here but again, he doesn't spell it out. if he wants to do something more forceful? should we start a war with syria? he should say so. he doesn't. he just uses it to imply the president is weak and he would be strong. >> bill: what about the overall charge that our standing in the world has suffered and nations of the world don't respect us anymore. >> not born out by the facts. u.s. standing in the world plummeted to historic post cold

war lows with the bush administration. poll after poll in other nations has said that obama has restored that. they went up a lot when he was elected, and it is tamped back down -- >> he is still the most popular politician in europe. >> yes. and u.s. standing now is higher now than almost any time in the bush administration. >> bill: and mitt romney is the one who said that our number one most serious threat on the planet is russia. >> is russia. yeah. >> bill: not al-qaeda, not -- yeah russia. got to wonder. let's talk mitt romney on foreign policy. do you trust him? do you think this is an issue that republicans can still win on? i think president obama has been tougher on national security than any other modern president to tell the truth.

[ laughter ] >> bill: and the other -- on the middle east, right -- >> yes. >> bill: where he says the president's policy is all wrong. >> these are the neo-cons. he postures on this. he acts strong acts tough, says he wants a two-state solution here. but that is not what he told his done no, sir. he says he doesn't really know

how to solve the middle east problem, when we quote should kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately somehow something should happen and resolve it. >> bill: that's what he told his donors behind closed doors. >> yes, and then in public he pretends he has some kind of solution. appearing tough is not a strategy. there was very it will until his speech that offered new strategic direction for the country. >> bill: you know what it really was, i think, it was not leadership, it was salesmanship as the president said. >> yes. >> bill: a bunch of platitudes but in the end, when you look at it, he is not offering anything new or that much different. >> yes. >> bill: all right. joe great to have you in studio

>> good to see you bill. >> bill: thank you. let me ask first of all is there any big difference between mitt romney and barack obama on lbgt issues? >> they are starting off with a softballball. i appreciate that. >> bill: i want to tell you why i asked the question. the other night i met a gay man who was talking about how great romney was in the debate and he is going to support mitt romney. and i thought you are like a chicken voting for colonel sanders. >> there certainly are republicans who are gay, and support mitt romney's candidacy. i think that on many of the markers that have been laid down by lbgt groups there is some -- some stark differences. obviously starting with marriage

equality. the president came out in support of marriage equality. and the administration has endorsed the respect for marriage act, which would repeal doma. and on all three of those points mitt romney has said he is the opposite. he has criticized the administration's decision to stop defending doma he doesn't support the repeal and said that he opposes marriage equality believes he said in a recent debate that he believes there should be some recognition or protections for same -- loving same-sex couples, which was an interesting acknowledgment to -- to acknowledge that couples can be -- can be loving couples and yet still hold out that there should be a different system. >> bill: where is mitt romney on don't ask don't tell?

>> mitt romney has not said that he would reinstate it. >> bill: unlike rick santorum. >> right. and paul ryan his running mate obviously, said that he believed that it was a done issue, and we had to -- it was time to move on. >> bill: yeah. >> there was some language in the party platform that people like elaine donnelly who had been one of the -- you are familiar with her -- her work? >> bill: oh god, yes. >> she had certainly praised certain language in the platform that talked about reassessing military policies, and that military policy personnel policy shouldn't be experimentation. >> bill: yeah. >> but at this point, you have got more than a year of

implementation of repeal. at that point you have a military structure. the same reasons why back in '93 then president clinton had difficulties with turning it over because the military is a large immovable object. >> bill: right. to be honest both you and i -- particularly you, i have been there when you have gone after robert gibbs and jay carney and the president not moving fast enough on some lbgt issues. so is the president a little late to the feast here? >> there were several governors, including andrew cuomo of new york and governor o'malley in maryland who were front and center on the marriage issue before the president, but -- and

there are other issues. you look at workplace protections. >> bill: that's the one that i remember. >> 111th congress worked on getting don't ask don't tell passed. there were a lot of people who also wanted in addition to that repeal wanted to see congress act on the employment discrimination act and although the administration had endorsed that bill there was no real push beyond -- the understanding was you can get one basically, and so we're now in a split congress where there's no movement for it. so had there been quicker movement back then it's possible we would have already had that passed. >> bill: one thing i found very interesting. i think i saw it on your site, in fact you wrote the article, that the log cabin group, which is the log cabin is the

republican caucus if you will right? organization? >> uh-huh. >> bill: they have not endorsed mitt romney. is that -- is that their way of saying, our party is bad on our issues? >> well the log cabin has twice declined to endorse their presidential candidate. back in 1992 when there was the famed pat buchanan social conservative rallying cry speech at the republican national convention when president george h.w. bush didn't refute that. log cabin issued a news release, saying because he had not refuted that, they with not endorsing him. and then in 2004 after president george w. bush came out in

support of any federal marriage amendment to ban all same-sex marriages across the country, then leg cabin again issued a release. this time, however, they are trying to take this -- this techniquely wait and see approach. just yesterday when i asked them about where the process stands they say they are still in communications and that there -- there -- last week, they told me that their endorsement is something that has to be earned and that they haven't made a decision about it, but i think you are getting at the point which is that if it's less than a month before the election and you haven't announced that you support your party's candidate, you're -- that is making a statement in and of itself. >> bill: it's a pretty powerful statement. >> yeah, and i think the group american bridge and courage campaign really took ahold of

that, and yesterday released a web video that was more poking than anything, i think in political terms. it featured david barack on tv, who is for media matters but also -- >> bill: american bridge -- >> american bridge super pac saying thank you to log cabin for not endorsing mitt romney. which obviously they were aware that the position is we haven't taken a position yet. and it was a good political way of pushing log cabin's in between position on a presidential race into the spotlight. >> bill: and for the record i guess if we would call them the main stream lgbt organizations, you mentioned several, right, but they have endorsed president

obama? >> hrc has endorsed president obama. they did so more than a year ago -- more than -- before the respect nominee was even selected, which caused some questions at the time. >> bill: yeah. but it looks like they -- on the issues, just dealing with the issues that they made the right choice -- >> log cabin hasn't endorsed but go proud who is the sort of more right-wing of the two gay organizations did endorse mitt romney, and they held an event last night, with bay buchanan. i'll let you just sit with that one. >> bill: i'm speechless that she is the one that they would choose to speak out for mitt romney on to the lgbt community? >> i'm not sure if she is the liaison -- go proud has a proud

history of finding the name that -- they are the group that had ann coulter speak to them. they are nothing, if not headline grabbing. kyrsten sinema is joining shut in >> thank you, bill. >> bill: tell us about the district. >> it is an urban and suburban district, making up all of tempe, and then all of [ inaudible ] and parts of chandler and mesa which are suburbs. but what the district unique bill is it is evenly split between democrats, independents, and republicans and makes it is true picture of what and arizona is as a whole. >> bill: so the registration is roughly one-third, one-third, one-third. >> that's correct. >> bill: what are the issues that you find people in your district, you know, are talk about or concerned about?

>> first and foremost the residents are concerned about jobs. those who have jobs are concerned about keeping them. and those that don't have jobs are concerned about getting them. and as you and i both know it's really tough economically for familiar list right now. and folks in the middle class are struggling each day to make ends meet. and that's what they are really focused on. >> bill: which is the issue that i think most americans are focusing on today and the number one issue in this presidential election. the issue of education came up last week several times in the debate. i know this is an issue as a state legislature that you have worked a lot on. >> it is the arizona state legislature sadly is known for being the state that has cut education the most the deeper per capita over the last several

years, so arizona schools are struggling, and i teach at arizona state university -- >> bill: oh, wow. >> i have been teaching there for ten years now. before they was a social worker at an elementary school. so this is a really important issue for me. my own story, i think informs why it is important to me. i was homeless when i was a kid, and it was through public education, pell grants academic scholarships that i was able to make it to the middle class and in arizona we're struggling to keep that high-quality education system, and this is a top issue in our race. my opponent wants to eliminate the department of education which would get rid of pell grants. it would eliminate after ford loans, work study program withes, and cut close to a billion dollars of funding from arizona schools. $739 million a year from arizona

schools. and that's his plan. my plan of course is to strengthen education, so that kids like me can have a shot to make it to the middle class. >> bill: that old thing about getting rid of the department of education is such a tired old republican talking point. in fact a lot of republicans have given up on it. obviously not all of them have we're talking with kyrsten sinema, i'm going to tell it for you, because it's an unusual spelling. we'll have a link on our website. it's k-y-r-s-t-en s-i-n-e-m-a. >> it's kyr. >> bill: there you go -- >> we have it on our website.
